What is CBD
Last month, we shared detailed information on what CBD is and how it works in the body and you can read the full post for an overview of CBD.
In this post, we’ll be focusing on the benefits of CBD for women, specifically and we feel you’ll recognize and relate to why women have embraced CBD as a supplement or treatment for a number of health issues. It’s a really great thing as it speaks to our open minds, our bodily awareness, and our ever-striving for solutions and the ability to be our strongest selves.
Why CBD is Particularly Effective for Women
It should be no surprise to any of us that women have more body fat than men, as a general rule. Compounds such as CBD attach and work through fat (see the previous post that explains why MCT oil is a key ingredient) and given that we have more fat than men, our fat enables the CBD to work more efficiently in our bodies.
We won’t bore you with the extensive data and research on the subject, rather, we’ll share the conclusion from the article titled “Sex Differences in Cannabinoid-Regulated Biology: A Focus on Energy Homeostasis” in the National Center for Biotechnology Information .
“The culmination of research findings spanning over two decades has made it abundantly clear that sexually distinct cannabinoid-regulated biology is the norm, rather than the exception. At the same time, they provide an indelible reminder that there is much more to be accomplished in elucidating the molecular underpinnings of these inherent differences between males and females, and how these can be leveraged to better serve humanity.”
More simply put, researchers now understand that men and women respond to treatments differently and rather than look at this as a negative challenge, this knowledge enables researchers (and correspondingly doctors) to provide more specific treatments and pose different questions regarding women’s health.
The research into the benefits of CBD and Cannabis are in their relative infancy and will continue. Correspondingly, genetic research will continue as well. Scientists are now examining what our genetic differences mean in terms of our susceptibility and response to treatments.
“Genetic research may also be useful for this translational continuum, by determining, for example, whether sex-related associations between genetic variants and common diseases described in animal studies may help us to understand why men and women often differ in their susceptibility to the development of diseases and in their response to medicines (pharmacogenetics).”
All of this is really great news and we women can look at each other knowingly since we have long been aware that we are very different from men in the way not only the way our bodies are affected by what we put into them but also because we tend to be very open minded to new treatments for everything from our health to our skin and hair.
As more states legalize medicinal marijuana, access to patients utilizing only CBD (with little to no THC and no psychoactive effects) to those using a combination of CBD and THC (in measured dosages) to treat a variety of health issues increases nearly exponentially. You may find the list of benefits below surprisingly long but we have been doing our research and we’d like to share our findings about the benefits of CBD to women’s health with you.
You see, at the core of Bloem, is our commitment to education. We educate ourselves and keep up with the latest research and we share it with you and encourage you to rely on us as a source of information and education as much as a product provider.
CBD and the Long List of Health Benefits for Women
It is common for doctors to prescribe antidepressants or anti-anxiety medications for women who have survived breast cancer and it is clear why they do–it is a stressful and frightening experience but there are reasons beyond just the mental symptoms associated with cancer.
Antidepressants are used to treat other treatment-related symptoms as well. The antidepressant mirtazapine (Remeron) can help people fall asleep faster and may increase patient’s appetite. Venlafaxine (Effexor) is prescribed to help with neuropathy, nerve pain, and hot flashes. Some patients find they have more energy with bupropion (Wellbutrin) which is also used to help people stop smoking.
It is also quite common for doctors to prescribe Tamoxifen. Tamoxifen attaches to the hormone receptor in the cancer cell, blocking estrogen from attaching to the receptor. This slows or stops the growth of the tumor by preventing the cancer cells from getting the hormones they need to grow. However, the side effects of Tamoxifen are a common complaint of breast cancer survivors.
Enter CBD. CBD can aid in controlling stress levels. Hormones are one way to control anxiety and inflammation in the body before cancer strikes as well as after treatment has ended. Some studies are even finding some types of cannabinoids are inhibiting tumor growth in some cases.
But the good news doesn’t end there. CBD may be fighting the cancer as well. The American Association for Cancer Research offers numerous research papers regarding CBD. They note:
“Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related death in women in the United States (1). Conventional treatment options are often limited by toxicity or acquired resistance, and novel agents are needed. We analyzed the effects of the Cannabis sativa constituent, cannabidiol (CBD), a potent, natural compound with reported activity in breast cancer cell lines, and elucidated its effects on key neoplastic pathways.
Cannabinoids can modulate signaling pathways central to the growth and spread of cancer. They inhibit cell-cycle progression and chemotaxis, and block angiogenesis (5). Recent studies have shown that cannabinoids also induce autophagic cell death.”
As we mentioned, research is ongoing and we will keep you posted as new research is published.

PMS and Menopause
Many women report that CBD lessens the symptoms of PMS and menopause. Because CBD fights inflammation, it can help relieve pain. In small doses, CBD can counteract the fatigue that often accompanies PMS and menopause.
We have found, through our own use and the feedback from our clients that CBD can help stabilize mood and minimizes mood swings and irritability.
We all know about the importance of keeping our immune systems strong and healthy and CBD supplements we can help control the inflammation of the central nervous system and keep our bodies in a lovely state of homeostasis.
According to the National MS Society, women are at least two to three times more likely to develop the disease. Several studies report cannabis as being an effective treatment for spasticity and improved cognitive function. While the cause of MS is still unknown, scientists believe several different factors may be involved including immune related factors and some types of infectious disease.
Alzheimer’s and Dementia
Researchers believe there are nutritional and physical factors that can play a role in limiting the onset of Alzheimer’s and Dementia before it starts. CBD is also both being used in treating and managing side effects of the disease because it aids in management of anxiety.
Hair and Skin
Here’s another perk, cannabis oil contains omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids and provides both your skin and your hair protection from the sun and other anti-oxidatives, like air pollution. We know that this is true because there are already skincare lines such as Crave that utilize CBD for skincare and to manage rosacea.
From Anxiety to Happiness and Calm
“Both men and women suffer from anxiety, but it tends to affect women more. In fact, they’re 70 percent more likely to experience anxiety disorders than men.”
Of course, anxiety affects both men and women but the data above is clear. From PTSD related anxiety to PMS or menopause related anxiety, to generalized anxiety disorder, our clients report significant benefits from the use of CBD. Many of our clients tell us not only are they less anxious, they are less nervous and even sleep much better, which is, of course, great for overall health.
